Working Together with the MCVP
At the McCluskey Center for Violence Prevention we focus on primary prevention, which means stopping harm from ever happening in the first place. We do this by focusing on the ways harm is enacted and how we all have the potential to cause harm. For decades, survivors have asked prevention educators to focus on teaching people how not to cause harm, and we seek to honor this demand in our work.
We recognize there are places on campus doing great work around awareness and response to violence; to support their efforts we focus on the prevention of dating and sexual violence.
Collaboration!
We recognize that ending sexual violence is not something we can do alone and value collaboration with campus partners. That said, we are also very intentional about our focus: primary prevention, intervening before sexual harm happens.
In the past when we have collaborated with campus partners, we have started with brainstorming sessions to explore where our shared goals are and how our collective ideas might come together in collaboration. The questions we typically ask when creating any sort of programming at the MCVP are “how does this focus on primary prevention of dating and sexual violence?” and “how does this interrupt the current narrative about sexualized harm?”.
Timeline
Effective collaboration requires planning ahead! If you are thinking about a collaboration with the MCVP, anticipate planning a minimum of three months to ensure that we have the time and space to be intentional, build meaningful relationships, and practice true collaboration with one another.
Ending dating and sexual violence on our campus is a community responsibility. In order to accomplish a goal this big, we must lean on one another for idea, experience, and knowledge sharing. We would love to dream up new and creative ways of preventing dating and sexual violence on campus with you!
